National Citizen Service

The National Citizen Service (NCS) is a "once-in-a-lifetime" opportunity for 16 and 17 year olds.

The Programme

Delivered from our Birmingham office, NCS develops young people’s confidence, learns them new skills, offers the opportunity to make new friends and learn more about making a difference in their community.

We delivered NCS for several years and had a great time, but we have now finished delivery.

From Autumn 2015 to 2017, we had over 400 young people involved. The programme took place during the school holidays in the autumn, spring and summer.

NCS has 4 exciting phases,

Phase 1: The great outdoors

An adventurous, action-packed residential away from home, with team-building, problem-solving, challenging outdoor activities and most importantly, lots of fun!

Phase 2: Back on home turf

A ‘close to home’ residential, involving getting to know local people and community organisations (only during summer delivery).

Phase 3: Get thinking and make a difference

The social action campaign planning and doing phase; for example, raising the profile of a local campaign, organising a sponsored expedition raising money for charity or planning an amazing project for the community.

Celebrating achievements with parents, carers, teachers and local dignitaries alongside the press and other invited guests and with certificates signed by the Prime Minister.

Phase 4: The future

The end of this programme is only the beginning, with  opportunities to continue development with UpRising, and part of the NCS Graduate association.

"There were so many good moments, it's hard to pick! [NCS] gave us more awareness of what was actually going on in our community."
Young participant 2016

UpRising delivered NCS to young people in Tamworth and Litchfield.
