Cardiff UpRiser gives speech at wales' launch of the Low Carbon Delivery Plan

March 25, 2019

“Wow - umm, okay, sure. That’d be good!”

When 24 year old, Sion Sleep, from Swansea, answered his phone to UpRising Cymru Programme Coordinator on the 6th of March, 2019, it had never crossed his mind that a couple of weeks later he’d be suited and booted, speaking in front of First Minister for Wales, Mark Drakeford and Future Generations Commissioner for Wales, Sophie Howe, addressing Welsh government on behalf of young people across Wales at the launch of Wales’ Low Carbon Plan, 2019!

With a fantastically written speech, Sion spoke passionately to a room of government officials and  decision makers about how climate change will affect his generation and those to come and why tackling climate change is so close to his heart.

Sion is part of UpRising Cardiff’s Environmental Leadership programme. Born and having grown up in South Wales, Sion has achieved a postgraduate degree in Environmental Dynamics and Climate Change at Swansea University and an undergraduate degree in Environmental Geo-science from Cardiff University. Sion is passionate about environmental issues, in particular climate change. He is currently volunteering with Friends of the Earth Wales and is running a campaign to reduce single-use plastics. With one week to go until the event, Sion had this to say: “I was so excited when UpRising gave me this opportunity to speak directly to people who have the power to make real change to Wales, our planet and our futures”.

Having never done anything like it before, Sion was a complete professional, communicating brilliantly the importance of making real change, and making it now:

“We have 11 years to score the biggest comeback in human history.”

Following his speech, Sion and fellow Cardiff UpRiser, Claudia, has time to speak with the First Minister before being interviewed by BBC Cymru Wales! And with an excellent atmosphere in the room and wonderful responses on Twitter, we’re sure this is just the beginning of Sion’s leadership journey!

Sion and Claudia are working together alongside others on their Environmental Leadership Programme to develop a Social Action Campaign encouraging Cardiff’s communities to make more sustainable meal choices to lower their contribution to climate change. Sion - your passion, hard work and real talent have shone and inspired real change today! We are SO happy for you!
