Alex is the Head of Programmes and has overall responsibility for all UpRising programmes.
What is your motivation for working at UpRising?
UpRising provides young people with the opportunity to do things they wouldn't normally and it's really exciting to be part of that and have the opportunity to make positive change in the world. Seeing the success stories of those who go through our programmes and find their 'voice' is fantastic. I'm especially driven by the visible difference in young people who aren't very confident at the start and by the end of the programme they feel (and everyone can see) a real difference. The rest of the UpRising team also keep me motivated - as we are all spread across the country, we only come together every couple of months but the energy when we do is like nothing I've experienced in any other organisation and I think that's because we're all passionate about the change we are making!
What were you doing before you worked at UpRising?
Before I worked at UpRising I did lots of different things - volunteering for the Oxjam Music Festival; I worked in a cheese shop; and I worked for BBC radio. I LOVE radio but not the early mornings!
What is one piece of advice you would give your 18 year old self?
To stop worrying. It will all work itself out, you'll be able to achieve what you want and the things you don't achieve probably aren't that important anyway. Focus on doing what you enjoy and then a job is never 'work'.
