Now in their fourth and final year, the Queen’s Young Leader Awards aim to discover, support and celebrate exceptional young people from throughout the Commonwealth. The Awards were launched in 2014 by the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, in partnership with Comic Relief, The Royal Commonwealth Society and the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Continuing Education. UpRising has been proud to be working alongside the Awards since their inception.

In June 2018, this year’s cohort came together for a Residential Programme which featured visits and activities at famous UK institutions such as Cambridge University, the BBC, and 10 Downing Street.

As part of the Residential Programme, UpRising staff hosted a group of 15 Queen’s Young Leaders for a “Crisis Games” session. “Crisis Games” is a two hour role-playing activity where participants work in five distinct groups – Government, Opposition, Business, Protestors, and Media – and play their role in response to the fictional crisis “the Prime Minister has resigned after media revelations show her to be in the pocket of big business; mass protests and instability has ensued.” The game is designed to give participants a feel of what it’s like in the real world when a crisis occurs.

Some of the Queen’s Young Leaders told us that the UpRising session was their favourite activity of the Programme, giving them an insight into the difficulties of negotiating while maintaining one’s moral values. The Games also helped them feel equipped to make a difference in their own communities if a crisis did occur – when youth voices are mostly ignored or muted. That is very much what UpRising is about; empowering the disempowered and showing those with potential just how much they can achieve.

For UpRising, it was a privilege to facilitate a group of inspirational young change-makers from across the world. The Queen’s Young Leaders Programme culminated in them receiving their Awards at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace where UpRising was represented by our Chief Executive, Lucy Caldicott.
