Learning Session 3, Public Speaking

January 20, 2012

On the 12th December, the London and Bedford UpRisers had an incredible opportunity to visit the prestigious law firm, Allen & Ovary. Here we had guest speakers, Phil Collins, who is Tony Blair’s chief speech writer, Shane Greer the executive editor of Total Politics Magazine, and Lord McDonald, a Labour Peer. The primary aim of this experience was for us to broaden our understanding about the dynamics of Public Speaking.

Shane Greer, informed us about the importance of social networks such as Twitter, in order for us to grasp the concept of how culture can determine communication within global societies, and how this can be manipulated for enhancing a campaigns profile. A specific part of Shane Greer’s presentation which interested me was the ideas of ‘Thinker or Linker’.  Within this he explained the key to being successful in Social Networking is instead of using facts or news worthy information, it would be more creative for the ‘Tweeter’ to place an individual spin on the matter. He stated that ‘Personality is key to success’ and therefore this was a vital aspect to take onboard for our campaigns.

Phil Collins had a fascinating theory when looking towards the syntax of speech delivery. He described the ‘6 elements’ of composing and delivering speeches. The elements which seemed most valuable in determining how well a campaign would function, is the audience, in knowing the target your trying to approach and attract. The campaign itself being strong and holding morally worthy aims and goals; therefore can be able to draw a strong public support. It was insightful to gain such a perspective from a key political writer during the times of hardship in the country. In 2005 the London Bombings, where Phil Collins had to help develop speeches for Tony Blair, that would give the public a positive outlook on the situations which were at hand.

Lord Macdonald (Gus) gave another intuitive understanding towards Public Speaking. He introduced the idea that passive behaviour can progress further than those who are bashful and belligerent. Examples of this would be key political figures such as Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, who chose to be receptive in their approaches towards dealing with the situations. This inspiration given by Lord Macdonald, has allowed my knowledge to broaden in how our campaign will affect others, by getting young individuals back into education and employment will help them to progress.

Overall, it was a valuable venture which I believe I gained a valid amount of knowledge and technique building skills. I would recommend this towards any groups or individuals seeking advice on campaign structures or generally enhancing their public speaking abilities. I fully appreciate having the experience of this opportunity and will apply what I have learnt towards bettering my UpRising campaign.
