Shereen Fernandez

Shereen is 21 years old and a recent Geography graduate from Queen Mary University of London. She is currently doing an internship with a human-rights NGO called ‘Cageprisoners’. The organisation aims to improve the circumstances and situation of political detainees worldwide, specifically those directly affected by the War on Terror.

She is extremely interested in pursuing a journalism career as she enjoys writing and believes it is a powerful source of communication to convey her opinions and feelings concisely. She is a frequent blogger and often writes articles on issues such as women’s rights, religion and society and is currently writing a piece titled ‘The Politics of Care’.

Her SAC is called Grassroots and it aims to promote community cohesion in Tower Hamlets through sport and roundtable discussions. They differ from other youth sport organisations as they want to promote the concept of co-learning which will allow both authority figures and the local community to benefit from a shared learning and understanding of one another’s beliefs, practices and issues.

Shereen is currently reading Malcolm X’s autobiography and is inspired by his ability to captivate global audiences through dialogue. She is also greatly inspired by a UK based human-rights lawyer called Gareth Peirce, who has worked tirelessly to defend prisoners and campaign for due process.
