Bethan Michael

I was born and grew up in rural North Wales before winning a bursary scholarship to undertake my A-levels at an independent sixth form college in Oxford. I went on to study at Cardiff University where I was awarded a Masters degree in English Literature with distinction in 2009.

Since graduating I have worked at the University of Bedfordshire as an administrator and become an active member of the Association of University Administrators, undertaking funded projects and organising events. This year I have begun a part time position as a lecturer.

In my spare time I volunteer with a talking newspaper charity and work on a Social Action Project with the other members of our UpRising team. Our project will involve working with young people to improve their confidence and develop practical employability skills. My interests include politics and cultural studies as well as writing, and in 2009 I was published in a book launched at the Hay on Wye literary festival.

At 24 my ambitions now include the commencement of a PhD, the broadening of my experiences in the world of work, and the cultivation of a successful vegetable garden. I am inspired by many people including Aneurin Bevan, Jennie Lee, Aung San Suu Kyi, Katilin Moran and the ever patient Mr Drew from Educating Essex.
